win vs ISZL 25 - 17, 25 - 21
After an early start, the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team traveled to Zurich for its first tournament of the season (the ISSL Tournament at ZIS) after just three practices. After a three-hour drive, the girls started off by playing ISZL and ZIS back to back in pool play. Although starting off sluggish, the girls woke up after junior middle blockers Ella Hauptman ’20 and Jennifer Kraemer ’20 made back-to-back blocks, destroying ISZL’s morale and boosting the team’s energy. This helped the team get into a rhythm, and the Tigers managed to beat ISZL in their opening game of the season and secure a place in the semifinal.
Unfortunately, the energy did not get them through against the host and tournament favorite, ZIS After losing the first few points through some powerful serves and hits, the Tigers struggled to bring up their game and fell 11–25 and 8–25.
Going through as second in their pool, the Tigers played against ISBasel in the semifinals. Led by strong serves from Captain Virginia Italia ’19 and Cristina Estevez ’19, the Tigers made it through the semifinals to play against ZIS once again in the final.
By the time the finals started, the exhaustion of the early start had hit the girls, and although they fought valiantly, they lost again to ZIS, taking second place for the tournament. This early tournament showed lots of potential for this year’s team, and the coaches look forward to developing the squad as the season progresses.
