On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, with blue skies and sunshine, the Middle School Track & Field team traveled to Basel to compete in the ISBasel Middle School Invitational. TASIS athletes competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m runs; the shot put and discus throws; and the high jump and long jump.
From Coach Tommy Manning:
After a long bus ride and a picnic lunch, the team was in good spirits through warm-ups while waiting for the meet to begin. Once we began competing, our athletes were buzzing all over the track and infield as they were competing or cheering for each other. We had athletes everywhere, as runners were on the track, the shot put was held in one corner, the discus was in another corner, and the high jump was in a different corner. The coaches found it challenging to get back and forth across the track to watch all athletes in all events!
Many of our athletes were very happy with personal records and best efforts. One runner finished last in a heat, but you would never know it because the individual was proud of their effort, even saying, “I’m proud of myself for trying my best.” I have never asked for more than that as a coach, and our athletes have heard me say over and over again: “Give me your best effort.” At their age I honestly do not care about times, distances, or heights anyway. I want them to enjoy this idea of competition and sports, but more than anything, I want them to have fun.
That stated, we do have several accomplishments worth noting:
Floor Van Leeuwen and Sarah Bjorck finished 6th and 7th, respectively, in the 100m.
Kobu Chidambaram won his heat and placed 7th overall in the 200m.
Ivan Linnikov won his heat and was 1st overall in both the 400m and 800m runs.
Florence Allanson, Van Leeuwen, and Bjorck all tied for 7th place in the high jump.
Chidambaram tied for 7th in the high jump and Carlos Vasallo tied for 9th.
Allanson finished 3rd and Bjorck finished 5th in the long jump.
Linnikov placed 1st in the long jump.
Allanson finished 8th in the shot put.
Linnikov placed 2nd and Oscar Schiller placed 4th in the shot put.
Schiller won the discuss throw.
As you can see, we had many outstanding performances yesterday. I spoke with each and every student after the meet, asking what was his or her highlight and low point of the day. To my surprise, many of them said cheering on their teammates or watching their teammates compete was their highlight. We had a great display of camaraderie and sportsmanship in Basel. The coaching staff is proud of each and every athlete who traveled with us and competed. Please share your congratulations with each of the following student-athletes when you see them: Florence Allanson, Sarah Bjorck, Floor Van Leeuwen, Kobu Chidambaram, Giorgio Ippolito, Philipp Larionov, Max Lim, Ivan Linnikov, Massimo Palmieri, Jan Sommerkamp, Oscar Schiller, Kelvin Tsoi, Carlos Vasallo, and Kirill Vavilov.
