The Varsity Boys Volleyball team kicked off its 2018 season with a third place finish at the ISSL Tournament at IS Basel on Saturday. With mostly new players and only five practices under their belt, TASIS performed quite well against more experienced teams and gained valuable experience throughout the day.

In their first game against the hosts, IS Basel, the Tigers lost in two hard-fought sets (21–25, 20–25). The two teams were very evenly matched, with both sets featuring a number of lead changes and impressive spikes and digs. Captain Nadir Timerbaev '19 and Ivan Linnikov '22 led the team with six aces and three kills and three aces and three kills, respectively. Rookie Ivan Kozhuhar '21 also notched four kills in the game.

The second match of the day was against the eventual winners of the tournament, ISZL. After a flat-footed performance in the first set, the Tigers came back to win the second game 25–20 to tie up the match. In a very exciting third set, TASIS came back from 9–13 to tie up the game but couldn’t manage to take the set, eventually falling 13–15. TASIS was led by Zhantimir Sarsenov '21 (three kills, two blocks) and Josh Galmarini '20 (one kill, two blocks).

In their third match against Black Forest Academy, the Tigers had their best showing yet with a come-from-behind 3-set victory (17–25, 25–20, 15–9). TASIS showed off its offensive potential with a number aces and kills throughout the game, including eight aces and six kills for Timerbaev and two aces and three kills for Galmarini.

TASIS finished strong with a 2–0 victory over ISBasel 2 in the fourth game of the day to secure third place in the tournament. Linnikov and Timerbaev led the team with six aces and two kills and four aces and one kill, respectively.
