Elementary School Counselor

Part-time position (three days per week)

  • Reports to Lower School Head
  • Interfaces with Lower School Head, Assistant Head of Elementary, SST team, LRC team, Students, Faculty and Staff, TASIS Community


  • MA in Counseling Education or equivalent
  • Elementary School Counseling Experience
  • Experience with English as an Additional Language (EAL) populations
  • Experience in multi-cultural, international environments
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication in both Italian and English


To serve as a student advocate and provide a comprehensive counseling program for children in Early Education (Grades Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1) and the Elementary School (Grades 2-5)

The Elementary School Counselor is responsible for developing and leading innovative guidance-related programs, activities, and services for TASIS students, families, and faculty.

The Elementary School Counselor collaborates with administrators, teachers, staff, and parents in order to enhance their effectiveness in helping students achieve their highest academic potential by removing or reducing social and psychological barriers to learning.

Specific responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement a high-quality, school-based guidance curriculum and program to support the school’s educational goals and objectives.
  • Plan and coordinate the dissemination of information relating to guidance program services to faculty, students, families, and the community.
  • Meet regularly with teachers to ensure effective coordination of services and information dissemination.
    • Prior to the new school year, meet with teachers to review information regarding students—both new and returning—that is pertinent to each child’s success and growth.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive guidelines and protocols for the school’s counseling program using the Responsive Classroom approach and following the Elementary School guidelines as outlined in the Elementary School Handbook.
  • Assist in early identification and intervention of children’s academic, personal, and social needs.
  • Work with administrators, teachers, parents, and students to design, implement, monitor, and adjust educational plans for individual students.
    • Participate in the school-wide Student Services Team (SST) weekly meetings.
    • Serve as a “case manager” for Elementary students in the SST.
    • Work with members of the LRC team and the SST team as needed.
  • Counsel individuals and small groups of children through the development of educational, personal, and social skills. Topics may include family issues, attendance, behavioral issues, academic challenges, peer problems, coping strategies, goal setting, communication skills, and organizational skills.
  • Act as a resource for faculty, staff, and parents. Refer students and their parents to special programs, specialists, and outside agencies when necessary, including individual and small group counseling and individual/family/school crisis intervention.
  • Conduct or provide in-service training for faculty and staff providing on-going opportunities for professional development.
  • Conduct or provide opportunities for parent education programs, including Parent Coffees.
  • Contribute items to the school’s weekly bulletins if information needs to be communicated to parents.
  • Review the counseling program with administrators on an annual basis.
  • Support the school and its leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Headmaster and Lower School Head.

Responsibilities to students

  • Beginning of the year
    • Support administration during New Family and Returning Family Open House and during rolling admissions for new families.
    • Support EAL students, especially at the beginning of the year when many students who cannot speak English require emotional support as they adjust to their new school.
    • Meet with all new students arriving at TASIS and provide classroom teachers with all relevant information.
    • Periodically check on new students’ academic and social progress.
  • Overall
    • Has a primary obligation to the student, who is to be treated with respect as a unique individual.
    • Is concerned with the educational, career, emotional, and behavioral needs and encourages the maximum development of each student.
    • Refrains from consciously encouraging the student's acceptance of values, lifestyles, plans, decisions, and beliefs that represent the counselor’s personal orientation/bias.
    • Is responsible for keeping informed of Swiss laws, regulations, and policies relating to counselees and strives to ensure that the rights of counselees are adequately provided for and protected.


  • Protects the confidentiality of student records and releases personal data only according to prescribed Swiss laws and school policies.
  • Adheres to confidential discussions and dissemination of student’s information during written and oral communication according to prescribed Swiss laws and school policies.
