Strategies for Coping with the Stress of a Heavy Workload

Ekaterina Plotnikova ’18, who previously explored the many joys of being an IB student, now offers a tongue-in-cheek look at how students deal with the stress of the final exam period.

If you constantly feel the pressure from your teachers, you’ve definitely heard the words, “This isn’t something you can do in one night.” Let’s be real: has anyone ever challenged this statement?

Most students procrastinate, and it seems like a great source of stress. It’s common to hear, “If tomorrow isn’t the due date, today isn’t the do day.”

Usually such a strategy does not help students achieve high results, and it frustrates them even more. This can lead them to greater procrastinations and stress.

Of course, it is much easier to do everything on time and not struggle to finish up at the last minute. Maybe better time management will kind of work for you, buddy?

Sometimes you are thinking you are on the right track, and have your life together, but then you realize those were just 45-second thoughts.

Don’t worry, we are all in this together, and we will all graduate!

It may be funny, but for some people it’s a huge struggle to set their goals and achieve them slowly step by step. Again, time management may be a good skill to learn for any person. Believe it or not, it does make your life easier!

Some students think they cannot fail if they do not look at their grades. Reality refusal leads to more stress, completely overthrowing the chance of success. Knowing where you are, and how to improve, can be a good source of motivation. Healthy mind—better life!

Teachers usually put us in an advantageous position, suggesting that we start assignments early and work slowly without rushing anything because that creates stress. Students, on the other hand, may believe that simply not doing the work will not cause any stress at all.

At this point, caring plays a larger role than refusal. Students can deny the duty and still feel guilty about it. Knowing that one doesn’t care is much worse and will never allow students to succeed.

One of the most popular Google searches amongst students is, “How can I get eight hours of sleep in four hours?” This is truly ridiculous! Students need sleep!

However, most of us don’t always sleep enough because of the work. It’s usually because of the stress—again! School isn’t everything in your life. You should still enjoy listening to music, going for a walk, and just not thinking about all the due papers.

No, going out does not count for CAS, but that’s all right. If you manage your time well, you won’t even struggle with the lack of sleep, and you may have a balanced life.

And, of course, many IB students report that they do not have dreams. This is because you need to be asleep to dream. Four hours a night are not going to work, especially with such an intense curriculum.

Everyone needs to relax. Work is not going to finish once school is done—there will be even more later. You can’t be this tired and stressed the whole time. You must rest!

Amongst students, the most heartwarming phrase you’ll hear is, “I haven’t started either!” This is like a little lighthouse in the middle of the ocean that gives you joy and hope for a better future.

Students do not like to feel lonely, even when it comes to the struggles of school life. Don’t worry, we are all in this together, and we will all graduate! (Hopefully.)

However, you can actually treat yourself during your studies if it becomes too rough. On each page of the book that you need to read for the exam, put a little candy. It will motivate you to turn the page!

Celebrating after 15 minutes of studying without a single little break will also work. And, of course, if life gets way too hard, laminate your notes. That way your tears will just fall off without damaging the paper.
