Art on Film

Take Me Home, Huey Sculpture by Steve Maloney PG '61

We are thrilled to share that filmmaker Alicia Brauns ’82 recently won an audience choice award at the Palm Springs Film Festival (and a glowing review from the Hollywood Reporter) for her documentary Take Me Home, Huey. She and production partner Christine Steele focused the film on TASIS alumnus Steve Maloney PG ’61’s sculpture of the same name. Steve transformed a US Army Huey helicopter into a mixed-media sculpture that spent much of the past two years touring the US as part of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War. The film, which was featured on the website of major US network ABC, also features interviews with veterans who flew Huey and relatives of those lost during the helicopter’s missions.

Congratulations to the team (which also includes alumna Jeanie Cunningham ’75, who composed an original song for the project) on their impressive work! To learn more about the Huey project, see pages 60-61 in the 2016 TASIS Today

Afghan alumnus interns at DC think tank

We’re always delighted to hear about recent graduates who are doing great things. Fatah Soroush ’14 was one of two students brought to TASIS on a full scholarship from Kabul, Afghanistan. He thrived at TASIS and is now a student at Roanoke College in Virginia. This semester he will be in Washington, DC, at the Institute for the Study of War working on their Afghanistan Project. We can’t wait to hear how Fatah will change the world!

Learn more about Fatah by reading his inspiring Senior Banquet speech on page 5 of the 2014 edition of TASIS Today.

Alumnus gallerist

Simon David ’08 has spent many years as an exhibiting photographer and working in galleries such as Flowers, Ncontemporary, Christie’s, and The Photographer’s Gallery in London. His love for contemporary art and photography began as a 10-year-old but continued during his time at TASIS. “My passion arose when I took my first photography class," he said. "My life mentor and basically family member Horst Dürrschmidt inspired me to continue my research in the field." It was this research and time that resulted in Galleria Ramo, Simon’s vision for contemporary art.

Galleria Ramo goes beyond the four walls of a typical gallery space. Instead, it uses temporary, "pop-up" spaces which, as Simon puts it, “allow the public to explore and celebrate function and waste, energy and entropy of spaces not intended for art—contextualizing the old with the new.” It also gives an exhibition the opportunity to be shown anywhere in the world, which allows for engagement with local communities. His ambitions for Galleria Ramo include keeping with the pop-up concept, but also settling into a permanent space.

As an initiative, the gallery does not represent any artists, but rather works on uniquely curated exhibitions. This puts an emphasis on collaboration and allows artists the freedom to develop their careers and collaborate alongside others. “I see the gallery as a stepping stone for emerging artists,” said Simon.

Galleria Ramo will feature three exhibitions in 2017. The first, entitled “This is Not a Curated Exhibition,” opens on March 2 in 18 different vitrines across from Lugano Arte e Cultura. It features a number of emerging artists (including TASIS alumnus Luca Marziale ’08) and includes photography, painting, and sculpture. For more information, email
