For the second year, First Grade will be working with Heifer International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending world hunger and poverty by donating livestock to struggling families in different parts of the world.
Between now and May 11, we are participating in Heifer International’s reading incentive program, Read to Feed. Students will be finding sponsors for time they spend reading. A suggested amount is CHF 1 for every 10 minutes the student reads (Grades 1-5) and CHF 1 for every 10 minutes students listen as someone else reads aloud (Pre-K and Kindergarten). Students may have multiple sponsors who may be parents, grandparents, or anyone willing to help them with this project.
Students may read in any language. At the end of the program, students collect their pledges and pool their money in class. The goal is for the Elementary School to buy at least six goats. Last year, First Grade earned 1600CHF, enough to buy more than 10 goats. We hope to have greater participation this year - to read more, and feed more children who are in need.
Through this project, we hope that students will not only have another reason to read, but will also be able to learn important lessons about different cultures around the world and the importance of using the Earth's resources wisely.
