From the return of classes and competitive athletics to skiing in the Swiss Alps and traveling across Europe, we take a photo-driven look at the past month at TASIS.

 

New Beginnings

After a well-deserved winter holiday, students returned to campus on January 9 for their first classes of the new year!

 

Outdoor Ping Pong

Two High School students took a break from academics to play some table tennis between classes on January 9. 

 

Magnificent Students

During the Middle School Fall Virtue Award Ceremony on January 11, nine exemplary students were presented Magnificent 7 Awards for their embodiment of the seven timeless values TASIS stands for: Respect, Integrity, Responsibility, Compassion, Humility, Service, and Vision.

 

Molding Memories

Ms. Simona Bellini's 8th-grade art class shared many lighthearted moments while working with clay in the state-of-the-art Şahenk Fine Arts Center on January 12. See more photos

 

Laudable Scholars

In recognition of their enormous scholarly contributions to TASIS, three seniors—Claudia Clarke Gosalvez, Silvia Cribari, and Nitzan Alexandra Gabriel—were inducted to the TASIS Chapter of the Cum Laude Society on January 13, joining fellow seniors Susanna Campbell, Chongyi Feng, Spencer LeGresley, William Pacini, Eleonora Poli, and Luigi Rebuffo, each of whom was inducted last spring.

 

Stoichiometry

High School students in Ms. Elizabeth Rodostianos’s Chemistry class worked in pairs on January 13 to determine—both mathematically and experimentally—the amount of NaCl produced when combining NaHCo3 with HCl. See more photos.

 

High Flyers

The Boys Varsity Basketball team hosted schools from across Switzerland for the ISSL Boys Basketball Championship on January 13–14. Coach Brett Gagnon’s Tigers finished third in the very competitive field. See more photos.

 

Weekend Warriors

Over the weekend of January 13–15, High School boarding students had the opportunity to take a ravioli-making class at Osteria Grotto Degli Amici, sing during a karaoke/open mic night in Villa De Nobili, visit the Transfinity Virtual Reality center, dine out and shop in Mendrisio, ski or snowboard in Andermatt, and more. From TASIS to the Olympics

Veronika Mühlhofer, the Valedictorian of the TASIS Class of 1997 and now the Venue Press Operations Manager for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, visited her alma mater on January 16–17 as part of the 2022–2023 TASIS Speaker Series. Learn more.

 

Campus Snow Globe

A snow flurry on January 17 turned campus into a winter wonderland.

 

Tigers Take Down Panthers

The Girls Varsity Basketball team bested their cross-border rivals, American School of Milan, on January 17 in the Palestra by playing tough defense and scoring in transition. See more photos.

 

Social Issues Book Clubs

To help facilitate conversations about pressing world issues, the 4th-grade students in the classes of Ms. Laura Hand and Mr. Jacob Rose formed social issues book clubs. On January 20, they met in their groups and began to discuss the important topics explored in their novels. See more photos

 

On Top of the World

The TASIS Ski and Snowboard Clubs headed to the Swiss Alps for a few beautiful days on the slopes! The newly formed Elementary School club joined the Middle School skiers in Splügen on January 21 while the High School club spent January 22 in the peaks of Laax. See more photos.

 

Tiger Pride

The Palestra was home to two fiercely contested Middle School basketball games against the American School of Milan on January 23. The boys fought their way to a one-point victory while the back-and-forth girls’ game ended in a tie. See more photos of the boys and the girls in action.

 

Empowered by Dance

Led by Sweet November Dance Company Director Julie Frazier-Smith, Commercial Hip Hop is the latest offering in the TASIS Elementary School’s After-School Program. The activity is designed to help students find isolations in their bodies, embody rhythm, and move together as a group for performance. See more photos.

 

Ambassadors of Eswatini

The TASIS Model United Nations team traveled to The Hague on January 21–27 for the 55th THIMUN Conference. Representing Eswatini and the International Labor Organization, the group of 16 students joined more than 2,500 of their peers from around the globe for the four-day conference at the World Forum Convention Center. The delegates from TASIS gave one of their strongest performances ever, passing two resolutions as main submitter, 15 resolutions as co-submitter, and five amendments. Four-year Model UN veteran Michelangelo Vecchio '23 served as Ambassador of Eswatini, and Sakura Tanaka '24 was the Ambassador of the International Labor Organization. Learn more.

 

Traversing Europe

More than 200 High School students and faculty chaperones closed down the month by spending a long weekend on Academic Travel trips in Salzburg (Music), Venice (Visual Arts), Geneva (World Issues), Florence (Dante Club), and Engelberg (Skiing and Snowboarding)! See more photos.
