From International Week celebrations and service learning trips to time on the slopes and successes in robotics, we take a photo-driven look at the past month at TASIS.

 

Lending a Hand

Twelve 10th-grade students and two faculty chaperones traveled to Naples January 30–February 1 for three days of service with the Mission Bambini Foundation, an organization that assists children in need around the world. The TASIS Service Learning group volunteered at a Kindergarten, visited the ancient city of Herculaneum, and returned to campus with a renewed sense of purpose. See more photos.

 

Celebrating Our Internationalism

To open International Week on February 2, selected students from all three divisions proudly marched around the Palestra with the flags of the 70 nations currently represented in the TASIS student body. See more photos and learn more

 

Guiding the Way

Later in the International Week Opening Ceremony, one student in each grade was presented a Torch Award. In the spirit of International Week, the prestigious award is presented to students who embody cross-cultural understanding and make a significant effort to reach out to students from other countries and cultures. Off and Running

The annual High School World Cup Soccer Tournament kicked off on February 2 with the first of two spirited days of pool play in the Palestra. See more photos

 

Winter Wonderland

Significant snowfall on the morning of February 3 turned campus into a snowy playground. 

 

TASIS C.A.R.E.S

Grade 1 students taught pre-K and Kindergarten students about the importance of responsibility during the fun-filled assembly they led in Focolare on February 4. Their presentation—in both English and Italian—was one in a series of assemblies throughout the school year that cover the values in TASIS C.A.R.E.S (cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control). Five Days, Five Rings, One World

Inspired by the Winter Olympics that took place in nearby Milan, the TASIS Elementary School augmented their International Week celebrations with values borrowed from the Olympics Games, which promote international peace and understanding and encourage mutual respect across cultures. On February 4, students and faculty members linked arms to create the five Olympic rings at Al Focolare (Pre-Kindergarten through grade 1) and on the main campus (grades 2–5).

 

Guest Speaker

On February 4, Martina Dinelli ’22 returned to campus to speak to TASIS’s Rare Disease Service Learning group about her experience living with a visible difference. In the four years since her graduation, Martina has pursued a degree in architecture and has become an ambassador for the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation.

 

The Thrill of Victory

This year's highly competitive World Cup concluded in the Palestra on February 4 with a thrilling penalty shootout in the championship match. Congratulations to this year’s champions! See more photos of the playoffs

 

School Spirit

Between games of the World Cup playoffs, members of the High School Dance Team performed for the boisterous crowd that gathered in the Palestra to watch the tournament. See more photos

 

Three-peat

Bragging rights belong to the TASIS Faculty for the third year in a row after a team of teachers and administrators defeated a team of student athletes in the annual International Week Faculty vs Students Volleyball Match. See more photos

 

Sharing Their Cultures

Eight Middle School students from around the world presented about their home countries at assemblies on February 4–5. See more photos

 

Foods of the World

High School students prepared a wide variety of delicious dishes from their native countries and shared them with their friends and teachers at the International Food Fair on February 5. See more photos and read a student account of this very popular annual event. 

 

TPA Treats

To celebrate TASIS’s internationalism, members of the incredible TPA baked treats from around the world to share with Elementary School and Middle School students on February 6. 

 

School Leadership

The TASIS Board of Directors met for a productive and engaging set of meetings on February 6–8. Learn more about the Board and the crucial role it plays at TASIS. 

 

Terrific Tigers

TASIS’s Varsity Badminton team dominated their competition at the NISSA Championships on February 7 in the Palestra, finishing first in girls and boys singles, first in girls doubles, and second in boys doubles. See more photos

 

Master Class

Renowned classical pianist Han-Louis Meijer led an engaging workshop for students over the weekend of February 7–8. Mr. Meijer provided personalized individual lessons to six students throughout Saturday and on Sunday morning, helping them prepare for a lovely concert in the Palmer Cultural Center on Sunday afternoon.

 

Top-Notch Robotics

Under the guidance of Coach Amy Bloodworth, the TASIS Tigers Middle School Robotics team of Ruhaan Patel ’31, Luke Vinciguerra ’31, Andrea Crisofulli ’31, Mark Mykhalchuk ’32, and Marat Syhyda ’32 finished first overall and took home the Robot Skills Champion Award at the VEX IQ Robotics Qualifying Tournament in Basel on February 8. When in Rome

TASIS’s Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams took in some historic sites in Rome before competing in their NISSA tournaments on February 7. See more photos

On February 11, TASIS’s Middle School Basketball teams faced off against the Panthers of American School of Milan in the Palestra. See more photos of the boys game and girls game.

The Varsity Girls Basketball team took on rival American School of Milan in the Palestra on February 12. See more photos.

 

Experiential Learning

On February 12, High School students in Liz Rodostianos’s Chemistry class used spectrophotometers to measure the amount of light transmitted through different concentrations of copper sulfate. See more photos

The Elementary School Snowsports Club took to the slopes above Airolo on February 14 for their final winter adventure of the season. See more photos

 

Second Annual Rare Generation Community Concert

Rare Generation—a band composed of TASIS faculty members, parents, and alumni—along with members of the High School Choir, Middle School Commercial Hip Hop group, and Elementary School Dance Program put on an incredible community concert in the Palmer Cultural on the evening of February 13. Spearheaded by Helen Lill—the faculty leader of our 10th-grade Rare Diseases Service Learning group—the inspiring event raised funds and awareness for Epidermolytic Ichthyosis (EI), a rare and currently incurable skin disease that affects 1 in 300,000 people. Young Changemakers

Students in the Elementary School’s Young Philanthropist Club, which is led by Language and Literacy Leader Melissa Fogal and Kindergarten Teacher Jamie Beecher, bravely presented to the entire High School at an assembly on February 16. The altruistic students discussed how they have worked together to learn about kindness, leadership, and problem solving and shared several of the initiatives they’ve been involved in this year in an effort to help the TASIS community and beyond. They’ve donated animals to families in need through Heifer International, have partnered with Ryan’s Well Foundation to help provide effective and sustainable solutions to the water crisis in the poorest regions of the world’s developing countries, and have lent their time and talents to the EI Cure Project, an organization founded by TASIS Global Service Program Teacher Helen Lill to offer expertise and support to those affected with Epidermolytic Ichthyosis while also raising funds to find better treatments for the rare disease. 

 

Carnevale Fun

The Elementary School celebrated Carnevale on February 17 with costume parades in the morning (Pre-K to grade 1) and afternoon (grades 2–5). See more photos

 

Connecting in Kenya

Fifteen students and four faculty chaperones traveled to Muhuru Bay, Kenya, on February 13–21 for an Opsahl Global Service Program trip to the Women's Institute for Secondary Education and Research (WISER). The group connected with the students of WISER, toured a local primary school, visited historical sites, embarked on a safari of the Maasai Mara, and returned to TASIS with a greater understanding of the struggles young women face in Kenya and an enhanced motivation to invoke change. Swiss Experience

Grade 6 students and faculty chaperones spent February 16–18 in Zurich bonding as a grade and learning about Swiss Culture. See more photos

 

Winter Adventure

Students in grades 7–8 spent February 16–19 in the mountains above Andermatt on the Middle School’s annual Winter Adventure trip. See more photos

 

Siena Study Session

TASIS seniors enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) spent February 16–21 at a historic Carthusian monastery in Siena engaged in an intensive study session designed to help prepare them for their exams this spring. Swiss Winter Fun

Nearly 300 High School students and 41 faculty chaperones took to the Alps for a snowy Academic Travel trip in Davos on February 18–21. The group had ample time for snowsports, Swiss culture, community building in the mountains, and the beloved Fleming Cup. See more photos
