TASIS Advanced Placement (AP) students rose above the challenges presented in a spring like no other and performed admirably on the restructured 2020 AP exams. A great deal of commendation is due to all students who took at least one exam, the resilient teachers who continued to work so hard to prepare them after TASIS transitioned to a distance learning model in March, High School Academic Dean Mark Abisi, and first-year Advanced Placement Coordinator Kerry Venchus.
In the analysis below, we review the cumulative data, recognize some individual successes, and shine a light on several standout sections.
Success Rate Reaches New High
All AP exams are scored from 1–5, with “success” defined by The College Board in the following manner:
“Success” on an AP exam is defined as an exam score of 3 or higher, which represents the score point that research finds predictive of college success and college graduation. These findings have held consistent across the decades. One example of such a study comes from the National Center for Educational Accountability, which found that an AP exam score, and a score of 3 or higher in particular, is a strong predictor of a student’s ability to persist in college and earn a bachelor’s degree.
In the spring of 2020, 88 TASIS students combined to take a total of 178 AP exams, with 79 students recording a 3 or higher on at least one exam. The College Board defines this as a school success rate of 90 percent, which continues an upward trend for TASIS students and once again represents a five-year high for the School.
TASIS students also raised the bar again by scoring a 4 or higher on 51 percent of their exams—up from 46 percent in 2019.

24 Students Honored
Twenty-four TASIS students earned AP Scholar Awards, which are granted by The College Board to “students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams.” This impressive total comes on the heels of the 25 awards TASIS students received in 2019—the School’s highest mark in many years.
The number of students who earned the highest honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, rose from four to seven. Congratulations to Airi Barnes ’20, María Luisa Caplan ’20, Benjamin Carlson-Peters ’21, Filippo de Cristofaro ’20, Marcel Ibrahim ’20, Ekaterina Panasenko ’20, and Emily Richardson ’20, who all scored 3 or higher on at least five exams with an average score of at least 3.50.
Seven more students—Melina Giovanis ’20, Joy Mack ’21, Qeis Mezghani ’20, Moritz Mohr ’20, Anna Savinova ’20, Caterina Volpi ’21, and Gaoning Zhang ’20—were named an AP Scholar with Honor for scoring 3 or higher on four or more exams and compiling an average score of at least 3.25.
An additional 10 students—Can Besen ’20, Martin Caplan ’21, Can Ferhatoglu ’20, Trinity Mack ’20, Elettra McConnell ’20, Hanna Osgood ’20, Enzo Pizzato Tondo ’20, Giulio Rebuffo ’22, Pablo Rivero Dominguez ’20, and Xinyi Shi ’21—were recognized as an AP Scholar for scoring 3 or higher on at least three exams.
With help from teachers in the Modern Languages Department, 15 students excelled on the Italian Language and Culture, French Language and Culture, German Language and Culture, and Spanish Language and Culture exams. Eleven students scored a perfect 5, and the cumulative average for these four exams was 4.67.
The eight TASIS students who took the 2-D Art and Design exam posted a mean score of 4.13, topping the worldwide average by 0.64 points. Congratulations to Ms. Kim Nelson and her talented student photographers for producing excellent results once again.
Led by Mr. Isaac Carey, 16 students took the Calculus AB exam and recorded an average score of 4.06, nearly a full point better than the 3.07 average for the 266,430 students worldwide who took the exam this spring. Seven TASIS students scored a perfect 5.
History Department Chair Dan Kirsch guided 10 students to a mean score of 4.00 on the European History exam, with four students scoring a perfect 5. The global average for the 94,312 students who took the exam this spring was 2.95.
Fine Arts Department Chair Martyn Dukes helped 15 students compile an average score of 3.67 on the Drawing exam. 20,486 students worldwide took the exam this spring and posted a mean score of 3.59.
Of the 22 students Mr. Eric White helped prepare for the Microeconomics exam, 15 scored a 4 or 5. The class’s mean score of 3.59 outpaced the worldwide average by 0.31 points. Mr. White also taught United States History and guided 11 students to a mean score of 3.27 (global average was 2.83).
Ms. Carolyn Rosenberger’s 10 students compiled an average score of 3.30 on the English Literature and Composition exam, surpassing the global average by 0.46 points.
