Let's Talk Football

For the third year “Televisione della Svizzera Italiana” (Swiss Italian television channel) is broadcasting the Super Bowl. What makes this broadcast so special is that TASIS’ own Elementary School Physical Education teacher, Giorgio Volpi, will be providing commentary for the second year in a row. As in previous years, the Super Bowl will be live on the Ticino Sports Channel – TSI 2. Tune in and listen to Giorgio early Sunday morning covering the 2014 Super Bowl!

Giorgio’s involvement with the local American football scene began when he played American football for a local Ticino team. He was asked to play for the national Swiss team, and this made him an elite player in Ticino. His skills as a football player did not go unnoticed, and he was one of the first players from this area who went to the United States to play football with a full scholarship. Unfortunately, Giorgio’s playing days were cut short by injuries, but when it came time for him to hang up his shoes he turned to coaching instead.

Giogio’s coaching career has been long and successful. When he was single, he was coaching two seasons a year, fall in the United States and then spring in Europe. During this time he won a Swiss title, three Italian titles, a European title, and participated in a variety of high school play-off and even college bowl games. He still enjoys coaching and in fact last year the local high school and senior team collectively had a 17-1 record with the C National Title for the adult team and a trip to the semi-finals for the high school team. He also serves as the Athletic Director for the local Ticino American football association as well as the Swiss national team defensive coordinator.

With all of this American football background it is no wonder the local television station wants him to assist with Super Bowl coverage. He helps with the technical consultation when there are penalty calls in the game and also helps the main commentator when he needs help to explain some aspect of the game.
There is an active American football presence in Ticino, and the local football association is always on the lookout for coaches at all levels – junior high, high school, or adults. It is a great opportunity to get involved with the community, meet people, travel in Switzerland, and learn Italian. If anyone is interested please contact:
