Inter Community School of Zurich again hosted the SGIS Cross Country Championships. Denis Breus '20 and Mihkel Vips '21, competing in the Category B race, were the first TASIS runners to attack the challenging 5.7-km course. Breus went out hard, slowed some in the middle of the race, and was caught by a runner from the powerhouse Zurich International School (ZIS). His true competitive spirit came through over the second half of the course as he battled back and forth with his competitor before finally pulling ahead with a determined push up the final hill just before the finish. Breus improved his time by almost a full minute from last year, finishing in 23:03, good for 7th place overall. Vips also competed well and finished strong in 15th place with a time of 25:04.
The fifth and final championship race of the day was the Category A competition. In the boys’ race, Harrison Reed '19 was the only competitor for TASIS. The lead pack of five runners quickly separated from the rest of the field and opened up gaps on each other in the first kilometer of the race. Harrison held his position for the remainder of the race and finished in a solid time of 22:21 for 5th place overall.
In the Category A girls’ race, the Tigers fought hard to defend their 2016 SGIS championship, but they were no match on this day for an incredibly talented ZIS team. Despite improving the overall finishing times of the top four scorers from last year’s winning team, the Tigers earned the runner-up team trophy this year. Rafaella Alencar Barros '19 again led the Tiger pack with a 5th-place overall finish and an excellent time of 25:06, an improvement of nearly two full minutes from her 6th-place time of last year. The second finisher for TASIS was two-sport athlete Emma Dressler ’18, who competed in three soccer matches for TASIS the day before and finished with an outstanding time of 26:18 for 7th place. Lyla Thompson ’20 just missed a top-ten finish with a time of 28:30, an almost two-minute improvement from her time last year. Rabiga Arip ’20 was TASIS’s final team scoring placer in 12th place with a time of 28:57. Also competing well for TASIS in the Category A championship race were Katie Kelly ’19 (30:19, 13th), Zoe Wang ’20 (30:32, 14th), Nina Gardner ’19 (32:42, 17th), and Megan Chen ’20 (38:04, 18th).
